Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Replaces No Child Left Behind (NCLB) – School Choice
President Barack Obama signed into law the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) on December 10, 2015. ESSA replaces the previous Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), also known as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. As a result, Pajaro Valley Unified School District will not continue to provide School Choice to students who were not enrolled in the program in 2016-2017.
If your child currently participates in Public School Choice Program he/she is permitted to remain in the School of Choice until he/she completes the highest grade in that school. When your child reaches the highest grade you must fill out an intra-district request during the open enrollment period in order for your child to attend Aptos Jr. High or Aptos High School the following school year. The Intra district request may be picked up at the Student Services Department, 294 Green Valley Road, Watsonville.
Public School Choice Transportation continues this year for students already receiving services and may continue until they reach the highest grade at their current school.
