School District Closed Friday 5/23/08 due to Fire and Air Qualty Issue

Subject: All Staff Memo

Due to the unpredictable nature of this Fire Event, the Pajaro Valley Unified School District will be closed tomorrow. We have been informed by emergency services that this fire is expected to be a two to three day event. Air quality tomorrow is expected to be the same as today, or potentially worse. It is always possible that winds will shift and take the smoke away; however, our first concern must always be to protect our children and our staff. Contributing to our decision to close the district were concerns about the difficulties encountered if we were required to evacuate our schools.

We have begun to receive reports of staff who have lost their homes. We also know that our children and their families will have losses. We will be arranging for counseling services, and we will be looking for ways to support families and staff during this tragedy.

Staff and students are NOT to report to school or work tomorrow, Friday, May 23, 2008.

Our district will reopen on Tuesday, May 27th.

RE:     Santa Cruz Mountains FIRE

The Pajaro Valley Unified School District would like to update and advise the current situation as we know it at this time.

While we wish to make it clear that none of our schools are in immediate fire danger, due to air quality we have evacuated Alianza Charter School and Watsonville Charter School of the Arts to Watsonville High School for the remainder of the normal school day.  Parents of students from those two schools are encouraged to pick up and sign out their students from Watsonville High School. Those Alianza students who remain at Watsonville High School will be bused from Watsonville High School at the normal dismissal times for their school.

The following schools – Amesti, Lakeview, Bradley, and Freedom – are notifying parents that  -  again due to air quality - they may come pick up and sign out their children at this time.  Those students who remain on campus will be dismissed at their regular time via their usual mode of transportation.

Although After School Coordinators and some after school staff will remain on sites, parents are being asked to pick up their students and not remain for the After School Programs. Students who remain on school sites will be transported in their usual manner.

Dear Staff:

At this point, none of our schools are impacted by the fire; however, due to wind changes, various sites have reported heavy ash in the air.

We ask that students and staff remain indoors.   Parents / Guardians always
have the option of coming to the school to pick up their student(s).  At this point, schedules are still normal with regard to academics and transportation.

As a District, we were asked to evacuate 180 students from Cupertino Union School District attending science camp in the Santa Cruz Mountains.  Those students are currently in the Lakeview Gym.  Buses from Cupertino School District are on their way.  The chaperones from the Cupertino District and PVUSD staff are taking care of the kids.  Food Services is delivering supplies as necessary.

If further information becomes available, we will send out an update ASAP.
