The Pajaro Valley Unified School District is pleased to welcome Mr. Ricardo Medina as the new Deputy Superintendent. The Board of Trustees approved his appointment on Wednesday evening, September 19th, 2007.
Mr. Medina comes to PVUSD from the Alum Rock School District in San Jose where he served as Academic Achievement Officer for the past three years. Previous to this assignment Mr. Medina has been a superintendent in Southern California and in the State of Michigan. Ricardo was born in Harlingen, Texas and was raised in Seguin, Texas where he graduated from Seguin High School as a four sport athlete before moving to Michigan.
Mr. Medina received his first bachelor’s degree from Saginaw Valley State University (Saginaw, Michigan) in Sociology and Business and completed the Bilingual Teacher program as well. His second bachelor’s degree came from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti where he majored in Education and received his secondary teaching credentials. He has a Master’s Degree from Michigan State University in Curriculum and Instruction. He completed additional coursework at Michigan State in Educational Administration in order to complete Michigan Administrative Credential requirements.
Mr. Medina moved to Arizona and later to California as an assistant principal and athletic director. From Arizona he moved to California as a Middle School Principal and later became Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources in Blythe, CA. He later became Superintendent of Central Union in El Centro, CA. From there he moved back to Michigan to be Superintendent of Bridgeport Spaulding Community Schools.
In California Mr. Medina enrolled at Cal State University San Bernardino to take two years of additional graduate level coursework in Educational Administration in order to fulfill California’s requirements for the Professional Clear Administrative Services Credential.
Mr. Medina began his professional career as a Hispanic Student Advisor at Delta Community College in Michigan and later became a Community Liaison with the Title VII Bilingual Program in Saginaw City Schools. He left to begin his teaching career in Bridgeport, Michigan in another Title VII funded program teaching Industrial Education and Career and College Awareness classes and later went to teach at the Saginaw Public Schools Career Center in the area of Manufacturing Technology. Mr. Medina left teaching to further his career as State Supervisor of Trade and Technical Education for the Michigan Department of Education in Lansing, Michigan. Mr. Medina later moved to Arizona and California to pursue his career in public school administration.
Ricardo has received numerous awards including: Outstanding Young Men of America, Saginaw City Council Citizenship Award, Saginaw Mexican American Image Award, Delta College Distinguished Alumnus Award, and General Motors Award for Excellence in Community Activities. He was a founding member of CALSA (California Association of Latino Superintendents Association) and ALAS (Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents) and has served as an officer in both organizations. He has also served as a member of the AASA (American Association of School Administrators) governing board and on various committees of this national organization.
Ricardo married in Saginaw, Michigan to the former Lucia Olgine. They have four grown children. Three of them along with five grand children live in Michigan and their youngest son recently moved from Scottsdale, AZ to Costa Mesa, CA.
